A New Earth New Ideas for Tough Problems
I love the work of Eckhart Tolle, and especially A New Earth. Many men have emerged as voices in literature and the positive change movement, calling for awakening.
Few however, have done so with a voice that resonates so well with women’s issues. With his monumental rise as today’s pre-eminent thought guru after his appearances on Oprah, few are the seekers who have missed his call to thought action. What does A New Earth have to offer women seeking solutions to personal problems? A lot. What you will find first, in this, his latest, and most profound work, is his advocating of something called 1. awareness of the present moment and 2. the dismantling of one’s ego, both required steps on the path towards awakened living. Ok. For some women, the urge to drop the book at this point, as being too Celestine Prophesy, may be strong. Yet, most women tell me that, as I found, they just can’t put it down. At The Edge of The Abyss. In this book, Eckhart shocks the world in his sharing of having once been suicidal. What?! Mr. Peace and Awakening? This personal sharing has elevated the status of his message profoundly. If he can do it, so can I…, one can’t help but think. He describes how he became aware of the fact that we believe we are dependent on what happens for our happiness. When in reality, what happens is The Most unsound, unstable element in the universe. It, or what happens, changes constantly. Problem Assessment. When we begin to assess a personal problem, we tend to look upon the present as spoiled by something that happened which we wish had not, or as deficient due to something that did not happened which we wish would have. In this flawed thinking, Tolle point out that we then miss the deep perfection inherent in life itself, one that is always already here, and that lies beyond what he calls form. Key Message A. He points out that, of great value to personal problem solving, is the letting go of Ego… something Freud talked about in his flawed and chauvinistic way. Thankfully, that craziness is mostly behind us, and modern psychology is to a great extent, free of it’s tyranny. Tolle’s take on it is more user-friendly and logical, and of greater value to our lives now, which may actually seem contradictory at times, to the letting go edict. B. Awakening to the abundance already in our lives. A New Earth lays out that the seed of all abundance is available to us now. Abundance and scarcity are both inner states. Citing examples from Christianity, Zen Buddhism, and Hindu spirituality among other philosophies, he asserts the perfection of the Now. Both these central elements are found in law of attraction strategy, and are key to solving problems and living more joyful, awakened and abundant lives, as he has. Sidebar: Since his awakening, he moved to beautiful British Columbia, Canada, and married his soulmate. Sound familiar? He does mention law of attraction in A New Earth, bravely stepping forward from other modern philosophers still avoiding the term. I wonder if he has had a conversation with Patricia Aburdene, author of Megatrends 2010 yet… if not, and if you are reading this Eckhart… call her now.
