What Is the Attraction to Daylight Savings Time? Very Little!
Well, I’m with Britain and Saskatchewan on the Daylight Savings Time
issue. Having long wondered about the wisdom of changing from and back twice a year, recent positive leaders’ plea for us to re-think this madness got my attention, including that of Dr. Goldman of White Coat Black Art fame. What is the attraction to daylight savings time, and should we re-think it? Now that research is pointing strongly to the health benefits of leaving the clocks alone, I say It’s Time.
What is the new attraction to this seemingly obvious idea? We want our normal ‘extra’ hour of daylight at the end of the day. Period. From my research, here are a few health related examples(1) Also, Ontario, see (3) below.): 1. We will exercise more. Who knew? It seems that leaving the clocks alone adds hundreds of active hours to our year, hours that we will (naturally for some – with conscious effort for others) spend burning calories and getting more exercise. Excellent. 2. We will have fewer car accidents. What? As well as other claims on this issue, I did some research on this, and studies have shown that leaving the clocks alone significantly decreases the number of accidents we have. Why are we not putting this data to work? 3. One more hour of daylight in the afternoon could hike our levels of vitamin D. Half of the population has low levels of Vitamin D. 4. 300 extra hours of daylight every year would give us time to do things we may not be doing now, due to early darkness Daylight Savings Time and Mood. With so many people of all ages struggling with depression, is it possible that this simple, zero cost change… that of leaving the clocks alone year round, could be part of the solution? What is the attraction to increased light levels? Research shows that we feel happier, have more energy and are sick less often in the longer days of summer when we are exposed to more light. Our moods and health may also show decline during the darker days of winter. Isn’t that a great positive psychology based reason to go back to the normal, natural cycle of light our planet has? Many places on earth follow the natural cycle and always have. Even within Canada, the province of Saskatchewan does not turn clocks back and forth every six months. Positive leaders are helping turn political will in Britain, towards an end to daylight savings time. Hopefully the same will play out, and successfully, everywhere.(2) Some of Our Readers' Favorite Pages. Links & Clickable Images to Popular Articles:
