Girls in Trouble. Speak, Share and Act to Save the Girls.
Are girls in trouble?
They certainly are. 85 per cent of teens report that they have been targets of sexual assault by their friends or classmates within their school experiences. (1) Girls sexting and becoming vulnerable to internet predators, boys seeking sex and worse, is now widespread. After hearing the well researched and provocative CBC Radio Documentary It’s a Teen’s World, I could not get the story out of my mind.
Solutions.The Positive solutions are emerging, and take heart – together we can change this pattern. More below on the It’s a Teen’s World project.
Girls in Trouble Documentary. I will not go into detail, as I certainly could not improve on Lynn Glazier’s powerful reporting, complete with disturbing interviews with teen aged girls and boys, and thankfully, solutions. CBC Radio did host the actual documentary on its site until recently. Hopefully they will re-instate it in the near future. (4)
Save the Children Worldwide, the issue of girls in trouble or marginalized and at high risk to health and well being, and the status of women in general, remains a critical concern. I have written in support of the Half the Sky book and movement, and my company has supported women in war torn and developing countries and local women's organizations since it was founded. Yes, boys are also at risk. However, right now, the issue of our children growing up in the new sexually-charged culture is presenting itself as a danger to our girl children’s health, happiness, freedom and futures, much more significantly than for boys.
Our Girls May be the Biggest Losers. The Radio Online Documentary deals with issues such as:
• Girls sexting
• The role of media and personal technology
• Posting photos and raunchy video of themselves online, thinking it is harmless
• The pressure to put themselves out there to fit in
• Girls trying to fit in and be accepted within a web of lies, sex and power trips
• The impact this phenomenon is having on our teenagers sexual behaviours and attitudes.
Solution to Girls in Trouble : It's a Teen's World Project
As is always the case, eventually good will prevail over evil. Sometimes it just takes a little while. This is a call to go beyond positive thinking(3), a call to readers, parents, teachers, leaders, women and men, teens and younger. Pass the following link on, and let's reverse this insanity before we lose an entire generation of girls to this powerful brain-changing phenomenon. (2) If you have not read Dr. Norman Doidge's The Brain That changes Itself and his brave writing on how pornography is literally changing the brain functions of men addicted to it, do it now. It also is packed with inspiring and hopeful research on the positive thinking effect, positive psychology and heartwarming success stories after serious illness and accidents. I could not put it down.
(3) For my law of attraction purists, I suggest a daily meditation built around the positive outcome of this phenomenon, and we as a society looking back one day saying, We did it! We took action and saved our girls.
The CBC, Lynn Glazier and everyone involved with this project are to be commended for shedding light on this critical issue, and acting in the direction of positive change.
(4) Please be forewarned: The documentary contains mature themes and coarse language. Based in Toronto, it is multicultural and very realistic, and if you are a parent living under the impression that your girls are not at risk of internet predators, or girls sexting, at a minimum, this will be a wake up call. Be brave, adults – our naive and media-brainwashed children and grandchildren need us to step in here.
