- Crating mental images to 'pull up' which help you focus on cooling, such as water, swimming, cool pitchers of lemonade, snow, ice cubes, icicles, skating...
How can I further apply my energy, attention and focus to my problem of night sweats?
The answer may lie in research such as this one: Meditation may actually help cool the heat flashes caused by menopause.
A new study suggests that menopausal women participating in a stress reduction with meditation had relief from hot flashes. They also reported that their quality of life improved. At some point during menopause, most women will feel hot flashes and night sweats. Little more than a nuisance for most, 10 to 20 % reported significant disruption to their lives.
Until fairly recently, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was the standard prescribed course of treatment. So many studies suggested HRT can increase the risk of heart disease and breast cancer, we now see it rarely and only short-term. The result is that alternative therapies are becoming more popular.
Research on Hot Flashes and Meditation
In the study, (see Menopause: The Journal of the North American Menopause Society), the effects of a mindfulness based stress reduction program were explored. This was a small study focused on hot flash severity and quality of life for fifteen women with an average age of 53.6, all experiencing menopause and reporting an average of at least 7 moderate to severe episodes / day.
The women were trained in (A) Body Scan meditation: gradually moving one's attention from feet to head, bringing awareness of sensations. This is done while lying supine, or on the back. (B) Sitting meditation: focus on flow of breath, sensations in the body, thoughts and emotions. One sits upright. (C) Mindful Stretching: exercises which aim to increase awareness during movement. Guided meditation CDs were also used by the women.
Meditation, a standard law of attraction strategy reportedly eased Menopausal Symptoms for the women: frequency of hot flashes decreased by an average of 39%. Also, the severity decreased 40% (average) over 11 weeks. Exciting to note, is that a 28% improvement was seen in quality of life. Most women reported being better able to cope with hot flashes.
Further study is required to explore these findings. However, the evidence is growing that basic healthy thinking strategies are effective for hot flashes, for many women.

(1) Spelling error intentional: menapause is a common spelling mistake women make when looking into the change of life issues that concern them, and may lead you to unreliable sources. It should be Menopause. Also, after teaching nursing students for 13 years, I know this: the best way to correct an error in medical vocabulary is to put it out there, and help people learn the correct spelling :)
