Telomeres and the Mind Body Connection
How long are your telomeres? No clue if you have any? You were in the majority until now. Telomeres are in every cell of your body, shortening with each cell division. Studies now show that overwhelmed, stressed people have shorter ones, resulting in a weakened immune system.(1)
The mind body connection is becoming increasingly clear and more important than we ever thought possible. Our ability to tap into universal laws of attraction, healthy realistic positive thinking and all the benefits inherent in living our lives in a healthier mental state is a fantastic resource available to us all. Still not convinced? To illustrate the point, I have chosen a few alarming mind body connection studies:

Ok. So Now What? Your health is absolutely affected by your repeated thought patterns, stress level, standard mental approach to life and all that fits into the mind body connection category of how our health got to this level, good or not so good. Is it easy to turn a lifelong habit of worrying and kvetching around to a law of attraction for health direction? No. If anyone is telling you it is, run in the other direction. However, you do have the ability to change your thought patterns and improve your ability to deal with stress, illness and probably prevent much of the latter. When I was a young RN, working on a busy Medical Surgical unit, the senior nurses used to say heart disease is a disease of stress, and cancer is a disease of anger. (5) Proof notwithstanding, the critical issue of heart disease and cancer in women supports us taking this information seriously.
Let’s get Started. This article is only the tip of the iceberg on this site, for issues in the mind body connection category. The beneficial effects of strategies such as mindfulness, healthy visualization and other law of attraction health skills have been clear to me for many years, and I encourage you to speak with your Nurse Practitioner, physician or other primary health care provider about ideas for incorporating similar concepts with any specific health issue you may have. In the meantime, the following is a fairly basic visualization tool you can develop for yourself, to access on a daily basis, and for times when you feel particularly unwell:
1. Develop Your Mind Body Connection Well Being Image Over the next few days, spend a few minutes a day creating a pleasant mental image of yourself in a state of well being. This image should include details about how you would feel, think, look like, sound like, move, breathe, sleep, and any other details you can incorporate until your self image of well being is crystal clear.
2. 30 Day Strategy Once you have your image, spend two to five minutes a day meditating about your image, and enjoying the good feelings generated by it.
Positive mind body connection imagery is not natural to many women, and requires some attention, energy and focus to re-create. The reasons are many: illness, trauma, low self esteem, overwhelm, etc. However, repeated use of positive pleasant mental imagery, a widespread application of law of attraction for health, does kick start and support positive change. Additionally, it is commonly known that at least 30 days is required to create new habits. Fall off the healthy positive thinking wagon in the middle of it? Just start over.

(5) More and more evidence is pointing to the causal relationship between stress and heart disease, though the American Heart Association is still cautioning that current data does not yet support specific recommendations about stress reduction as a proven therapy for cardiovascular disease.
