Positive Thinking with a woman's touch
Are you 'really' using positive thinking? Are you in menapause? Hot Flashes? Pregnant? Need a re-fresh on this proven strategy for health? What's in it for me, right now? Here are a few benefits of Realistic Optimism, for women: 1. You may have more resistance to the common cold 2. Your psychological and physical well-being is better 3. Your risk of cardiovascular disease may be lower 4. You will cope better during times of trouble 5. You will manage menapause better and may live longer(1) 6. Rates of depression are lower for optimists 7. Lower levels of distress These are just a few reasons which may apply to your situation. (See Positive Thinking Self Assessment below) I have been researching positive thinking for over twenty years, and have hundreds of studies and evidence-based articles I can refer you to. Women have shared with me, I saw The Secret, I read books by Dr. Dyer, Dr. Chopra, and it’s not working for me. For many women, deliberately attracting what they want instead of attracting what they do not want, is still a mystery. Realistic optimism and healthy positive thinking seems ineffective to them. If you are going in spurts and stops, inconsistently seeing improvements in your life, you will benefit by a positive thinking approach that works for you. The concepts may be the same, however, the voice you heard them from may not ring true for you. Or perhaps you had to buy a $1500.00 “Program” to get the whole deal. Yikes! Testimonial re Positive Thinking A client of mine - let's call her Jane, saw a very caring psychologist and shared with me her experience: He’s using the techniques of positive thinking and re-framing, just like you teach. He helped her focus on what she did want as opposed to a fixation she had on a very depressing past event. He never used the term law of attraction, or beyond positive thinking, yet Jane had done a lot of reading by the time she saw him and said, there was no question that the strategies he was teaching her were the same as those she read about by Dr. Coué, Joseph Murphy, and others. And guess what? Jane is getting great results! Even the Mayo Clinic is helping people with advice that this strategy is a good thing. The professionals may not be using the same terminology (although some are), but the most helpful among them all enable women to move in a more positive direction, attracting better and healthier outcomes by changing the way they think. Realistic Optimism Directly affecting a woman’s health and well-being, realistic optimism styled positive thinking is a key element in stress management. Does this mean keep your head in the sand and ignore the mess your kids left? Or that your husband forgot your birthday? Or worse? No. However, approaching troubled times in a more positive and productive way is a powerful strategy indeed. Are you serious? Controversy exists around The Secret Rhonda Byrne, law of attraction, and any massively promoted, popular representation of mental habits as keys to success. The recently increased awareness around positive thinking is no different. No, ladies – we can not magically make things appear simply by imagining or visualizing those things. Visualization, positive relaxation and effective use of daydreaming, as Einstein did, are all excellent "Energizing" law of attraction tools. However, there are positive thinking habits you must adopt, things you must do, and changes you must make, if you are serious about creating a better life for yourself. What if, by making those changes, you found yourself in a significantly better situation, or having attracted a wonderful manifestation, one year or a few months from now? And what if, along the way, a multitude of positive events, co-incidences and cool things happened to you as well? That, my friend, is how healthy positive thinking really works. Let’s start with 2 basic principles: 1. If you are trying to think positive, and yet you are getting or staying discouraged much of the time, then the best rose coloured glasses in the world will not help you improve your situation. 2. The discouraged feeling you are getting is over riding your attempt at positive thinking, and preventing you from having the good feelings, using positive language, and taking the effective actions you should be taking to kick start and maintain positive change. Have you ever noticed that when you can get a clear decision on what you really want, and you are able to get excited about it, and start moving in that direction – then... helpful people, events and resources start lining up? You can learn to think Beyond positive, in a deep, healthy, effective way. You deserve it, and you can do this. If you have had a lot of hard knocks in life, and are generally a discouraged, negative woman, take it easy on yourself. Give yourself a little TLC. It will take you some time to develop a positive thinking approach that is consistent. However, the woman who experiences this transformation emerges a new, freer and more powerful woman, graced with the ability and the resilience to enjoy life’s bounty, and to help others moving forward. Positive Thinking Self Assessment. Start by taking a good look at how you are currently moving through life. 1. Are you filtering out positive aspects of a situation? Are you then magnifying the negative aspects? Let’s say, for example, you had a great Sunday with your family. You brought a delicious casserole to the pot luck, and were complimented for losing weight, your new hair colour and your completing a college essay. But you keep remembering the nasty jab your sister-in-law made about your not-so-new outfit. That evening, you focus only on your clothes, the wardrobe you own that needs updating, and forget about the compliments and good feelings you enjoyed. 2. When something bad happens, do you blame yourself, without even thinking about it? Like this: the man you have a date with this weekend cancels because of a death in his family. You, however, personalize this, and assume that he is lying, and is not really interested in you. 3. Do you anticipate the worst? As in: Fearing you will not know what to talk about, and that it will be a catastrophe, you refuse an invitation to speak at a women’s business networking luncheon. 4. Do you see things only as polar opposites… either good, or bad? For example, You see your “C” on an exam as a total failure, and your To-do list as a perfect example of organization. Since there is no middle ground, you always have to be perfect or you feel like a total failure. If you are answering yes to these questions, you will very much enjoy the benefits of making some real changes to your current thinking habits.
