Relaxation Techniques that work.
A client shared an AHA! moment about relaxation techniques
recently. She said, obviously discouraged with trying to meditate ( for years !! )...: I know I'm doing something wrong. I read The Secret. I know about law of attraction and positive thinking. I just can't get this meditation part. HELP!This woman had attended one of my women's workshops, and it was clear to me that she was a very stressed, anxious person. Not the woman in the photo. She looks way too relaxed. I am not a diagnostician, and can not determine if she has an anxiety disorder or even a personality disorder.(1) Like many women I see, she seemed on edge all the time. However I do know this: Women are more stressed, overwhelmed and exhausted than they have been in years! Decades maybe? Centuries? Add information overload to that, and Ouch! There is no way you will be able to meditate, if you can not first relax. Period. You must first learn, and more importantly, do, daily relaxation techniques. Do any of the following scenarios sound familiar? A. You take a deep breath during your work day, and realize you have not taken a deep breath in some time. You have been breathing superficially for hours. B. You get home from your work day, looking forward to your time back at your sanctuary, your place of relaxation. Once home, you are making dinner, caring for your family, throwing in a load of laundry, helping with homework, returning phone calls... shall I go on? How is your sanctuary time so far? C. You have been bombarded by information, news and demands all day. You pull out your meditation cd, settle down and ... you can't stop the mind movie of chaotic thoughts. Might as well try to sleep, you say to yourself... crawl into bed and try to doze off. But no. You can't lie still. The law of attraction strategies you need to use... what were they again? You can't relax. Give yourself some TLC right now. Some Tender Loving self Care. You can not do it all. You can not keep trying to do it all. You need to go back to basics, start with some Positive Relaxation 101 ... then we can move on to meditation. So, here are a few women-friendly basic relaxation techniques. Note: No, that extra glass of wine is not the answer. Basic Breathing for The Stressed-out Woman: This can help you control anxiety before it gets out of hand. We think we know this stuff, but are you really doing it? Start now. Spend 3 to 10 minutes with this basic relaxation technique. But first, for women, I insist you unhook your bra. Yes. It will make a huge difference. In the workplace, you can do this in the bathroom or locker room. Who cares if someone notices you are doing your relaxation technique? It's your life. Your health. Close your eyes. Breathe slowly, deeply. Make sure you fill your lungs with air. Your belly should rise a bit. Inhale through your nose. Exhale through your mouth, holding the tip of your tongue behind your front teeth. Sounds weird, but it helps.Focus on your breath by listening to the air flow in and out. Be aware of any tension in your body. If you are at a computer all day, or any activity that causes you to repeat the same movements or hold the same posture all day - you definitely have tense muscles and tight ligaments. Relax those muscles as you breathe, by tightening them first, then relaxing them. Visualize a favourite desire you have, as manifested, in law of attraction style, such as: Imagine your relaxing place: the beach, the forest, a campfire. You are there, enjoying it, seeing it, smelling it, hearing it.That's it. Once you are successful at basic relaxation, you can go back to learning meditation techniques again.
