The Law Of Attraction
...are professional women still part of the positive thinking megatrend?
Reality check. Did The Secret do more harm than good to the rise of the law of attraction as a healthy thinking tool for improving the lives of women? That my friend, is a topic of hot debate. The jury is still out on it, and only a massive research project with a control group, one who has never heard of the secret, could give us the evidence based answer. We do know that the similarities between positive thinking and LOA are many, and that current research proves
the power of optimism
in health, career life and the womans world.
We also know that other more commonly known management philosophies and concepts, such as appreciative inquiry, modern positive psychology, learning organization theory and even the hugely successful FISH (TM) philosophy all share the same core concepts as LOA.
In the meantime, I hear from professional women, stay at home moms, women in small business and from all cultural groups on a regular basis. What I am hearing, is that many women are taking the good out of the Attraction over-hyped media messaging, and applying it in their own ways, beyond positive thinking. Note: visit our page on

Just as most women (and men) in professional life rarely discuss or pronounce themselves on the matter of their spirituality, the same goes for their internalization of the concepts of the law of attraction.
You do not have to explain yourself to anyone with regards to what strategies you are using for your own spiritual wellness and goal achievement - whether it is prayer, cut and dried strategic planning, or attraction based methods. What The Secret did do, was introduce the law of attraction on a global scale. Can a woman create a perfect life with the law of attraction as it was presented? If it were that simple… in a perfect womans world, there would be no war, no inequality, no abuse, no marginalization of the underprivileged. Remember, in professional life and throughout the world, there are other forces at work… a major element of our reality not presented in the secret.
What the law of attraction does have to offer professional women is a mind body soul strategy for everyday life. Some people find my philosophy on it, which I teach as a 2-Step strategy, too clinical – too much like strategic planning – too organized – not new age enough. Some people are looking for magic, genies, crystals and incense. However, as a health care professional, my goal is to help women with tools that are evidence – based and methods that can help them create sustainable positive change. Period. Yes, that does include healthy thinking strategy, and I feel that method has proven itself to be the foundation for women’s wellness. I would prefer to see a client whose life or workplace is continually improving, slowly and steadily, than one who has a blast of attraction, followed by one disappointment after another, because they can not sustain the feelings required.
The Secret was not meant to mislead anyone, I believe - and I certainly enjoyed my copy of the dvd. Its creators were on a mission to promote a very specific belief, and they are entitled to it. The opposed view held by some women, is that thoughts have zero influence on our lives, or the world we live in, and that there is no point in making any effort to think healthy. My views on the subject are moderate. I like sticking to what works, and I value reason over magical thinking. A woman does not need blind faith, or any faith at all to apply the law of attraction. She does, however, need to learn to consistently make clear decisions, apply her energy, attention and focus to those decisions, and cultivate a knowing confidence that there will be a positive outcome for her.
For those of you in professional life and leadership roles, know that I have had doctors, CEOs, Board chairs and business owners all share with me that they are in fact using those strategies… before meetings, with client interactions, and in their personal lives. Some of the energizing strategies these women are using include visualization, meditation, positive relaxation, dream boards, gratitude and more. Sound familiar? P.S.: I have seen copies of the law of attraction books by various authors tucked away in their offices.(1) Hmmm....
